First, let’s talk about what retargeting is.
So, retargeting is basically a piece of code that you can place on any page of your website and when a visitor lands on that page, it will put a cookie into their browser that allows you to track them around the web and display ads to them.
Usually, you design these to get people to come back because they haven’t taken an action that you want them to take on your website. The way that we typically will use these most effectively is to place the retargeting tracking code onto the order page of your website.
And what they allow you to do within that code is to actually put some URL parameters on there so that you can remove the cookie from people that actually hit the Thank You Page after they’ve ordered your product or service. So that way you are not displaying the ads to people who have already bought.
Now there are several ways that you can run retargeting with Facebook. The first is through a company called PerfectAudience, and what they’ll allow you to do is actually create the ads within their system and then you can display ads on the right-hand column, or in the desktop newsfeed of Facebook.
The other is Ad Roll. Ad Roll is a little bit unique because what they will do is allow you to use your ads on Facebook on the right-hand column or the news feed, and they also have partnerships with a huge network of websites so you can put banners out and have those ads displayed all across the web driving people back to your website.
And then the third and most people don’t know about this, is Facebook recently created their own retargeting code.
So you can go within the ads manager, you can create a custom audience that is based off of your website, and they will give you a retargeting code that you can place onto your page and then serve up ads directly on Facebook, either on the right-hand column or the news feed that you can use to drive people back to your website.
The one advantage to using the Facebook code is that it will allow you to avoid having the mark up that Ad Roll and PerfectAudience will have on the cost per click that you pay on your ads.
Alright, and so then all you do to make sales is you simply place that code on your action page and then in your ad you want to give them a special offer or ask why they didn’t take you up on the initial offer and give them the opportunity to comeback to your order page to complete the order.
And if you follow those simple steps you can easily make a massive amount of sales using retargeting on Facebook.
One thing that you need to understand is that online advertising is becoming increasingly difficult to pull off successfully using the traditional methods because people are simply becoming blind to them.
The most effective way to combat this is using native advertisements which is just a fancy term for ads that look similar to the content around them. It sounds counter-intuitive but the best way to get noticed is to actually blend in.
Think of soap operas and infomercials. They are the original native ads and have been running successfully for decades, selling billions of dollars of products.
